CTG’s Classic Clip of the Week

A-Ha’s Take On Me may just be the ultimate 80’s track. That catchy 80’s style beat, the insane vocals, and synths! It’s recognized by just about everyone– and if you don’t know it, you probably live with Patrick Star.

It’s featured on numerous TV shows and movies, from the Simpsons, to Deadpool, to A Dog’s Purpose. Its music video has amassed over 1.6 BILLION views on YouTube–the same video that catapulted the song onto the charts in 1985.

The video that you’ll see below was a huge hit on MTV back in the day. If you were a kid or a teen during Take On Me’s peak popularity, chances are the pencil sketch/live action music video is etched into your brain.

“I have no doubt that the video made the song a hit,” A-Ha’s keyboardist, Magne Furuholmen says. “The song has a super catchy riff, but it is a song that you have to hear a few times. And I don’t think it would’ve been given the time of day without the enormous impact of the video.”

This probably isn’t the best karaoke song, because those vocals seem IMPOSSIBLE. But we’ll scream along to it anyway when we catch it on the radio.
